Name |
Francisco Torres Pacheco [1, 2] |
- 25 Jan 2021 - I am changing the surname from "Pacheco" to "Torres-Pacheco".
This comes from Francisco's obituary in the Honolulu Advertiser newspaper. In both obituaries, they state is full name as Francisco Torres Pacheco.
Using Spanish Paternal/Maternal apellido (surname) structure we can surmise that his father's paternal surname is Torres, and his mother's paternal surname is Pacheco.
What we don't know is either of Francisco's parents maternal surnames.

Notes |
- Using Spanish patronymic surnames I have created a placeholder ancestor for the parents of Francisco Pacheco.
From his obituary we have learned the paternal hispanic surname: Torres.
In Puerto Rico, his full name would have been:
Francisco Torres y Pacheco
Torres is his father paternal surname and Pacheco is his mother's paternal surname.
Upon entering the US, his paternal surname would have been dropped, leaving just Pacheco. [3]

Notes |
- 4-16-97 Uncle Lou -
Francisco was born in either Spain or Portugal in the late 1800's near the Azurs in Europe.
Not sure how or when he came to Puerto Rico.
Met Guillerma Coribiore, had 14 children, came to Hawaii in approx 1906.
Francisco lived with Nana & Papa in Honolulu after Guillerma died.
He died sometime after Pearl Harbor. Dad thinks around 1947 because they moved to Calif in 1950 and he had been dead for a few years. Francisco was killed walking across the street either buying gum or going to visit his brother Mike.
4-19-97 Dad -
Dad remembers him as being a light skinned man, not very tall, possibly Spanish.
Francisco had a brother who stowed away on some ship, was caught and had to work to pay his passage. Not sure where the ship was going. He was approx 13 - 16 years old. The brother either moved to the big Island or Maui, Francisco never heard from him.
**Conflits between Dad and Uncle Lou-
Dad thinks F & G came from Puerto Rico on a ship through the Panama Canal to Hawaii. Uncle Lou thinks they came by ship to either New York or Miami, then train through Luisiana, to either L. A. or San Francisco, then by ship to Hawaii. *** Need to check imigration records.
- Mary Pacheco stated: He was married prior to Guillerma when in Puerto Rico. He had other children then.
In Kekaha, the Pacheco's lived in the Portuguese Camp, because the Spanish section was filled.

Hello Lawrence, as I noted before I was researching my 2nd great-granduncle who was born 6 Sep 1871 in the town of Toa Alta, PR. He was one of 9 siblings and his birth record is the only document I have for him and therefore I don't know at this time what happened to him. I came across your Francisco and I was curious about him. As you know there was a significant Puerto Rican migration from PR to Hawaii in the early 20th century. I have other family lines in Hawaii.
Your research indicates that he was from Yauco and I thought maybe his wife was from Yauco and he adopted the town as his birthplace (common in PR to find discrepancies in birthplaces). I started to research and nothing came up in the PR Civil Records (it starts in 1885) for Francisco. I moved to Catholic Church records and what I found were records were Guillerma was noted as a single mother in the baptism records of several children. However, I was not sure if this was the correct Guillerma. What I found was 5 children born in Yauco, PR between 1888 and 1897. Church records are very goods because they will not only include information about the parents and godparents but also information about the paternal and maternal grandparents.
These 5 children share the same maternal grandparents, Guillerma's parents, Ramón Caraballo Velázquez and Isabel González Morales). The 5 children are recorded with only the Caraballo surname. The 5 children are Margarita (27 Jul 1888), Gumersindo (13 Jan 1890), Marcelina (25 Oct 1891), Francisco (15 Sep 1894) and Aurora (25 Jun 1897). The key record was the next child Venancia (1 Apr 1899). She was born in Ponce, PR and shares the same maternal grandparents with the first 5 but the document notes Guillerma not as a single parent but married to Francisco Pacheco Torres from Yauco.
The document also notes the paternal grandparents, Francisco's parents, Inocencio Pacheco Gutiérrez (1800-1867) and Paula Torres Caraballo (1830-1897). After Venancia, the next child is Alfredo born in Hawaii. Therefore, Francisco and Guillerma left PR for Hawaii sometime between 1899 and 1903. Something to note is that until sometime in the 20th century the town of Ponce was a port town. Sailing from Ponce to the mainland and/or other destinations was common. With Francisco's the parents I was the able to find the grandparents, Juan Antonio Pacheco (1760- ) and María Gutiérrez (abt 1770- ). Once again the documents were church records which noted other the parents of Juan Antonio, Juan Pacheco and Juana de la Concepción. At this point it gets more complicated.
As you know there are many Pachecos in the Yauco area and western PR and it will take sometime to connect Juan Antonio with one of the Pacheco lines in the area. For Guillerma I have the names of the grandparents in addition to the parents. For Francisco in the Torres line I have the names of Paula's parents and grandparents. I have done a lot research in PR going back 300 to 500 years. It is a slow process and there are many limitations.
I still want to do more research to find our common ancestor. There are may possibilities but eventually I may be able to establish the connection. The challenge with DNA geanology in PR is endogamy. I hope this will be the first of many notes we'll exchange. I'am still working on the Pachecos from Hawaii which based on DNA are distantly related.
My wife and my mother in-law are my cousins in the 8th-9th range. I identified the most likely common ancestor (about 300 years back) with solid documentation. Also, from a DNA perspective we share a common DNA segment in chromosome 21 (percent triangulation) so I think that overtime we'll find our connection. I retired in 2019 and I am doing this almost full time so I can take my time. Let me know how would you like to proceed. I am sure you will want to get copies of the documents. Also, please note that church records in PR are in their original form which sometimes present a challenge buy Yauco has some of the best records compared to other parishes in PR. Lastly, my name is Antonio. Best regards.
