Robert Garretson - 1920-2007

STREATOR - Robert L. Garretson, 87, formerly of Streator, died Saturday evening, March 3, at Morris Hospital.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Stephen's Church in Streator with the Rev. Eugene Radosevich officiating. Burial will be in St. Stephen's Cemetery in Streator with full military rites. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Hagi Funeral Home in Streator with a rosary at 7.

Mr. Garretson was born March 3, 1920, in Cornell, to Milo and Carrie (Davis) Garretson. He married Mary Josephine Kever on Sept. 30, 1950, at St. Stephen's Church. She died Sept. 22, 2003.

He was employed at Anthony Company and Peabody-Myers Company, both of Streator, prior to his retirement in 1985. He was a member of St. Stephen's Church, Third Armored Division Association and United Auto Workers. He served in the Army during World War II with the Third Armored Spearhead Division, Armored Engineers in Europe, France and Belgium including the Battle of the Bulge and at Omaha Beach in the invasion of Normandy.

He is survived by two sons, Gary (Kim) and Kevin, both of Morris; four grandchildren; a great-grandson; two sisters, Theresa (Raymond) Redfern of Streator and Betty Brill of Washington, Ill.; and a brother, Charles (Geri) of Streator.

He was preceded in death by five sisters, Maxine Johnson, Esther Sornberger, Leora Garretson, Loretta Bunting and Mary Sue Wonders; and two brothers, Earl and Harold Garretson.

Pallbearers will be Bill, John, Daniel and Gerald Garretson Jr., Marion Johnson, Matthew Bunting, Kenneth Redfern and Steve Wonders.

Memorials may be directed to the Parkinson Disease Foundation or the donor's choice.
