Stephen F. Gaydos 1956-201001/13/2010, 10:52 pm
He served his country in the U.S. Navy from 1973 to 1979, aboard the USS Lexington CVT-16 as a Boatswains Mate-BM3; obtaining an honorable discharge. He retired after 22 years as a supervisor with Tow Boats and Material Services. He served his community as chief of security at Palm Beach Resort in Orange Beach, Ala. He also served in the Police Officer Reserves with the Elberta, Ala., Police Department. He served as a crossing guard for many years without pay. "He was so dedicated to the kids that it was unreal," said Mayor Marvin Williams of Elberta. Steve put himself at risk several times to keep the kids safe. Gaydos was on his way to work as chief of security of Palm Beach Condominiums in Orange Beach when the head-on accident occurred. He is survived by his wife, Beverly; his daughter, Shannon (Bernie) Garcia; three granddaughters, Scarlett, Jassmine and Veronica, all of Alabama; his mother, Elizabeth (Alvin) Dickey of Streator; two brothers, Fred and Robert Gaydos, both of Streator; and two sisters, Annette (David) Bycroft, and son, Eric of Rolling Meadows; and Theresa (Lewis) Diaz, and children, Jessica, Josh and J.D. of Pontiac. Services were Jan. 8 in Foley, Ala. Interment was at the Wynn Cemetery in Summerdale, Ala. A memorial fund has been established for the Gaydos family. D.; all reside in IL. The family will receive friends Thursday, January 7, 2010, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Wolfe-Bayview Funeral Home, Foley, AL. Services will be held Friday, January 8, 2010, at 11:00 a.m. from the Chapel of Wolfe-Bayview Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Wynn Cemetery, Summerdale, AL.
