Juan was in the Spanish Army. He was supposed to fight in a war against the French, when the war ended. His family owned land and were sheep herders.
He emigrated with his family to Kauai, Hawaii. After beginning work in the sugar plantations on Kauai, he began a homestead in the hill on the other side of the island.
He became very sick c. 1924. The family abandoned the homestead and went to Honolulu (where there were better doctors). The homestead was about 33 acres.
